The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) report that peak flu season typically takes place in mid-February, with cases that extend throughout the spring.
Now is the perfect time to gear up for further prevention. See below for five tips to ward off illness this year.
Here's how our state is faring so far this flu and RSV season:
Flu: As of Feb. 15, California is experiencing high levels of illness. 381 flu-associated deaths have been reported in California so far this season, according to the California Department of Public Health.
RSV: RSV has seen a sharp uptick; of 5,045 tests for RSV from Feb. 9 to Feb. 15, 616 (12.2%) were positive, according to CDPH statistics, with seven reported RSV-associated deaths in children ages 0 to 4. Last year, there were only two related deaths in this age group.
Five tips to prevent illness:
- Get vaccinated: No, the flu vaccine does not give patients the flu. It does help prevent the virus and also makes symptoms less severe if you do get sick.
- Wash your hands: The CDC lists handwashing as the most effective measure for keeping seasonal illness at bay, second only to vaccination. Do not touch your face with unwashed hands.
- Keep your immune system healthy: Get plenty of rest and eat balanced meals that include fresh fruits and vegetables.
- Clean shared surfaces at least once each day: Wipe down countertops, doorknobs and other spaces you share with co-workers and family members.
- Stay away from those who are sick: Keep at least three feet of distance from people who are visibly coughing or sneezing.
