It's Woodcutting Season!

Folks can now begin gathering firewood, as long as they have a permit in hand. Woodcutting permits for the Sequoia National Forest and Giant Sequoia National Monument are available at Forest Service offices in Dunlap, Porterville, Springville, Lake Isabella, and Kernville and are valid from now until November 30, 2013.

Wood permits are $10 per cord with a minimum purchase of two cords per person ($20) and a maximum of ten cords per household. The cost of the permits is nonrefundable. Customers will be given a woodcutting area map and instructions regarding policies. Currently, only dead trees that have fallen to the ground may be collected. Between June 1st and Oct 15th, standing dead trees may be cut down and harvested within designated areas of the Kern River and Western Divide Ranger Districts with a permit. Live trees may not be cut.

Vehicles may not travel off designated roads for woodcutting. For more information regarding roads and trails, go to Woodcutting activities throughout the forest are based on current road, weather, and fire danger conditions—please check with your local Forest Service office for details or updates on conditions before cutting firewood.
