Symphony Director Takes Final Bow

After decades of service, Bakersfield Symphony Orchestra and Music Director John Farrer has announced the 2013-2014 season will be his last. Beginning with the 2014-2015 year, Maestro Farrer will assume the title of the Orchestra’s Music Director Emeritus and Conductor Laureate. Farrer will be completing 39 years of service as music director, leaving a lasting imprint on the musical life of Bakersfield and Kern County, entertaining tens of thousands of music patrons, in addition to scores of school children who received their first exposure to classical music via the Young People’s Concerts led by Farrer. After stepping down here, he will continue as music director of the Roswell, New Mexico Symphony Orchestra and the Santa Maria Philharmonic and give more time to expanding his work abroad, including workshops in England, France, Italy, Australia, and South Africa. He also plans to complete the recording of two of the four symphonies of Brahms with the New Queen’s Hall Orchestra of London. “It has been my privilege to conduct the Bakersfield Symphony Orchestra,” said Farrer. “The BSO is a special orchestra consisting of highly skilled musicians… The consistency of membership has produced cohesion of ensemble that is remarkable.”
