Local FFA Youth Bring Fresh Corn to Market

After lots of hard work, two young Future Farmers of America now find themselves nearly up to their necks in tall, sweet summer corn grown organically without chemicals.

Eric Wallace, a recent Kern Valley High grad, is growing the corn as one of his FFA Supervised Agriculture Experiences (SAE), which allows members to learn how to produce a successful yield while maintaining records of work/volunteer hours, profits, and community outreach. This SAE will help Wallace earn his American Degree, one of FFA’s highest honors. His partner, fellow FFA member Tyler Simmons, currently attends Kern Valley High. Simmons is using this SAE to work toward his State FFA Degree. Both are using monies earned from corn sales to pay for their end-of-October trip to the National FFA Convention in Louisville, Kentucky, where more than 50,000 young FFA members will meet.

Restaurants and local organizations interested in purchasing quantities of corn can contact Eric via Kate DeVries at 760-417-9024.
