In 2014, the Women’s & Girls’ Fund will award at least $25,000 to local nonprofit charitable organizations, but the deadline is this month. The Fund looks for grant requests that address literacy; educational attainment; dropout prevention; high school graduation; achievement of A-G course requirements; college prep or re-entry; job skills training and educating emancipated foster youth.
Founding Chair Judi McCarthy said, “We believe that a strong educational foundation is a girl’s best opportunity for future success… but we are concerned by specific challenges in Kern County’s educational climate [and] hope to target some of these challenges with our grants.”
Interested nonprofits should visit the Foundation website at kernfoundation.org > Initiatives > The Women’s and Girls’ Fund > Our Grantmaking to review requirements, appropriate forms and grant policies, and then submit a Letter of Intent online by November 6, 2013. Organizations invited to submit a full application will be notified by December 6, 2013, with final applications due January 22, 2014.
The Women’s & Girls’ Fund was launched in 2005 as a leadership initiative of Kern Community Foundation. To date, grants totaling $131,000 ($105,000 for Education and training) have been awarded from an endowment that has grown to nearly $1 million.
