The flu is a highly contagious, viral infection of the respiratory tract. According to author Elizabeth Pantley, more than 20,000 children each year are hospitalized for flu complications, and 165 children died during the 2012-13 flu season from these complications. Pantley adds that the flu can be mild or severe, and the flu season can last from October all through May.
