Promote Reading in April

Celebrate National Library Week, a national observance sponsored by the American Library Association (ALA) and libraries across the country during April 10 through 16, with the theme Libraries Transform. It is a time to acknowledge the contributions of our nation's libraries and librarians and to promote library use and support for all types of libraries -- school, public, academic and special.

In addition, a national month-long celebration of the reading program, "Drop Everything and Read," (D.E.A.R.) reminds people of all ages to make reading a priority in their lives. Beverly Cleary wrote about D.E.A.R. in Ramona Quimby, Age 8. Since then, D.E.A.R. programs have been held nationwide on April 12th in honor of Mrs. Cleary's birthday to celebrate her timeless stories, and the joy of reading for the full month.

April is also School Library Month designated by the American Association of School Librarians' (AASL) celebration of school librarians and their programs, where school librarians are encouraged to create activities to help their school and local community recognize the important role library programs play into a student's educational career.
