4 Memorial Day Weekend Celebrations

With the hectic weekend, it is easy to forget the true reason that we honor Memorial Day as a national holiday. This is the best time of year to honor our veterans and lost loved ones, and Kern County Family Magazine has gathered events that uplift Memorial Day and give honor to the fallen.

Thousand Flags Memorial Celebration

Saturday, May 28-Monday, May 30

11:30 AM-5:00 PM

The Park at Riverwalk will come alive over Memorial Day weekend with the flying of a thousand flags in honor of the many heroes who have served, and continue to serve, our nation and our local community. The event is presented by Breakfast Rotary and the flags are sponsored by community members wishing to honor friends and loved-ones who are veterans and active service members, plus first responders (including law enforcement, fire personnel and emergency medical technicians) who put their lives in jeopardy for their communities' safety. Volunteers are still needed to set up, and they can come to the Park at 7 AM to plant flags. Flag sponsorships are also still available at $50 per flag and can be ordered online at The public is welcome to view the flags anytime and take and share photos online.


Saturday 11:30 a.m. Display opens

Saturday 12:00 noon National Anthem and raising of the entrance flag

Saturday and Sunday Evenings "Taps" will echo across the lake as the entrance flag is lowered at sunset, approximately 8:00 p.m.

Memorial Day 10:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m. - Patriotic Fair featuring exhibitors and vendors.

Memorial Day 11:30 1:30 p.m. Ceremony and presentation with color guard honors, the National Anthem, and presentations from our local veterans and first responders. Bakersfield Symphony Orchestra Brass and Drum Core will be playing patriotic music.

Memorial Day 2:00 5:00 p.m. Flag sponsors may pick up their flag and a keepsake certificate to either keep or present to their honoree.

Bakersfield National Cemetery to host Memorial Day Weekend Ceremony

The Bakersfield National Cemetery and the Bakersfield National Cemetery Support Committee invite the public to attend a ceremony to pay tribute to our nation's heroes, those who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our nation, this Saturday May 28, 2016. The ceremony begins at 9:00 a.m. and is expected to last approximately 45 minutes. The Associated Veterans of Bakersfield and the Sons of the American Revolution will provide Honor Guards. Music will be provided by the Arvin High School Band and Eric Dyer. Guest speaker will be Ms. Anita Hansen of the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, and Keynote Speaker will be U.S. Congressman Kevin McCarthy. Other local and state elected officials will be present as well. Immediately following the ceremony, all gravesites will have an American Flag placed on them. Family members of those interred at the cemetery will be given priority in placing the flags. The Bakersfield National Cemetery is located on Bear Mountain Boulevard/SR-223 approximately one half mile south of SR-58. The address is 30338 East Bear Mountain Blvd., Arvin, CA 93203.

Salute to Our Fallen Heroes

The Kern County Veterans Service Department and the Kern Veterans Memorial Foundation will present its annual Memorial Weekend program, "Salute to Our Fallen Heroes" to honor Kern County Veterans, beginning with World War I, whose lives were given in service to this nation. The ceremony will take place at 1:30 p.m. Saturday May 28, 2016 at the Kern Veterans Memorial at the corner of Truxtun Avenue and S Street, near the Bakersfield Amtrak station.

The public is invited to this patriotic event which will include the National Anthem, flag salute, guest speakers, wreath laying, rifle salute, and playing of Taps. Medal of Honor citations of two local heroes will be read aloud. Honors will be provided by the Associated Veterans of Bakersfield Honor Guard and the Sons of the American Revolution. Musical selections will be played by the Highland High School Pipe and Drum Band. U.S. Congressman Kevin McCarthy will be the keynote speaker. Several local and state elected officials are scheduled to attend. A large shade canopy will be provided and approximately 150 seats are available.

CSUB to Explore Sacrifice of Hispanic Veterans on Memorial Day Weekend

"Guerreros Americanos: The Valley at War," a discussion and film event focusing on Hispanic participation in American conflicts since World War II, will take place on Saturday, May 28, beginning at 3 p.m. in the California State University, Bakersfield (CSUB) Library's Dezember Reading Room. The event will begin with a film, "War and Peace, 1942-1954," which is part of the Latino Americans series from PBS. A panel discussion will follow the film, led by local historian and veteran of the Bosnia conflict, F. Javier Llamas. Panelists include Wesley Barrientos, a veteran who lost both legs in the Iraq war and a director of the local Wounded Heroes Fund; Duane Goff, Vietnam Veteran and past commander of the Kern County Chapter of the American GI Forum; and Bert Marquez, a Korean War Veteran.
