Red Cross Offers First Aid Online Course and App for Cat and Dog Owners

by Vaun Thygerson

The Red Cross now offers a Cat and Dog First Aid online course and Pet First Aid App for pet owners, pet-sitters, and dog walkers to help provide emergency care until veterinary help is available. The online course at redcross.org/catdogfirstaid can be completed in approximately 30 minutes and includes how to determine a pet’s normal vital signs and step-by-step instructions on how to handle bleeding, seizures, and heat stroke. It also provides information on preventative care, health, and tips for a pet’s well-being. Download the app by texting ‘GETPET’ to 90999, by visiting redcross.org/apps, or by searching ‘American Red Cross’ in app stores. The app helps owners compile an emergency supplies list, assemble a pet first aid and emergency kit, and where to find a pet care facility or pet-friendly hotel. Also included are step-by-step instructions, videos, and images for more than 25 common first aid and emergency situations.
