The World Health Organization has designated 2020 as the year of the Nurse and Midwife, especially as they are also a large part of the health care worker shortage being experienced around the world. Many local nurses were recently awarded for their outstanding service during a virtual ceremony by The Kern County Chapter of the Association of California Nurse Leaders (KCACNL). Scholarships were also given to nursing students in various stages of education from Associates Degree to Doctorate levels. KCACNL also supports a pipeline program, Kern RN Explorers, providing high school students with “hands on” introductions to the nursing profession in various healthcare environments.

This year’s theme, Invoking the Passion of Nursing, resonates with all the healthcare challenges facing the world. Hospitals, local agencies, and colleges nominated 31 nurses in 9 categories. These categories represent nursing excellence in both inpatient and outpatient settings as well as education, innovation, humanitarianism, leadership, and lifetime achievement. Ten scholarship recipients were also presented $1,000 each.

The nine category winners are: Clinical Practice in an Inpatient Setting, Lina Daoud of Bakersfield Memorial Hospital; Clinical Practice in an Outpatient Setting, Marivic Cadiz of Dignity Health; Emerging Nurse Leader, Christopher Harkins of Kern Medical; Exemplary Nurse Leader, Mary Ann MacNutt of Dignity Health; Education for Patients and Staff, Amy Hubert of Bakersfield Memorial Hospital; Education in an Academic Setting, Karin Urso of California State University, Bakersfield; Innovation in Professional Nursing, Juliet Garo-Guinto of Bakersfield Memorial Hospital; Humanitarianism, Amara Dobbs of Dignity Health; and, Lifetime Achievement, Mary K. Stanley, Retired.
