The Kern County Superintendent of Schools Migrant Education Department announced today that thousands of books have been donated to migrant children in Kern County by Macy’s through its “Be Book Smart” campaign in partnership with Reading is Fundamental (RIF), the nation’s largest children’s literacy organization.

So far, RIF has distributed more than 9,000 books locally over the past two months at 32 locations including schools, labor camps, community parks and at homes.

Jose Morales, director of Region V Migrant Education, said the books have gone to children of all ages, from two-years-old on up. “Many of these young people may not otherwise have a book to call their own,” he said.

RIF has placed 400 million books in the hands of more than 35 million children since it was established in 1966. For more information, go to www.RIF.org.
