When Jeff Nickell, assistant director of the Kern County Museum, does something, he jumps in with both feet. "I don't believe in doing things half way," he says. And, true to form, over his 13 years at the museum, he has become an expert in Kern County history. You can read his collection of fascinating historical accounts in his new book, Chronicles of Kern County.
His book archives many stories from Kern County's past, and features accompanying photographs from the museum's collection. An exhibit showcasing photographs and artifacts relating to his stories will run until October 31.

I found out it was my history," he says. "I realized that everything I learned about was what made my town what it was."
He credits many historians who have pre- served Kern County's heritage and finds inspir- ation in their work. And, he believes that the best way to get people interested in the history of this area is to get these stories out to the public. A few years ago, he started writing and recording one-minute historical segments to air each week on KERN-1410. He is also the editor of Historic Kern, a quarterly publication for mem- bers of the Kern County Historical Society.
"We need to know where we came from to know where we are going – knowing our past gets us to our future," he says.

His family helps Jeff share his passion for history. During the holidays they dress up in period pieces for events at the museum and tell stories about Kern County. His daughter has also been a junior docent for the museum's summer camp program for the last few years.
With his wife, Katie, and their children, Courtney and Christopher, they enjoy taking family vacations and spending time together. They also share a love of music. Courtney followed in her mother's footsteps and plays the flute. Christopher plays the French horn. Jeff played the percussion, and now enjoys writing country and gospel songs.
