Local Sign Language Interpreter Helps Africa

Local sign language interpreter, Sandy Heflin, recently spent two weeks in Africa helping to promote education for deaf students. As part of a disabilities conference for the Gospel Ministries for the Deaf, Heflin spoke about the importance of language and early intervention for the deaf.

The first week in Africa, she taught teachers the techniques and methods for teaching deaf children. "Africa doesn't have deaf education," she says. "They barely have special education, so the teachers that are teaching deaf children are not trained to teach them."

The second week she visited officials from all over the country. She met with the National Nigerian Commissioner of Education and the Enugu State Minister of Education.

Heflin founded Color of Language, a non-profit corporation that develops educational material for deaf people. She is also establishing the foundation, Poverty of Deaf Africa.
