Congratulations to "2009 Mrs. Bakersfield"

pageantwinners

Rhenana Grimes fulfilled a lifelong dream as she was crowned "2009 Mrs. Bakersfield" at The Bakersfield Pageant hosted November 8 at The Bridge Bible Church. A sign language aide at Independence Elementary School, Rhenana competed in interview, evening gown, and fitness categories as well as presented a platform for community service. Her platform is to encourage people to learn American Sign Language to communicate more effectively with the deaf community.

As this was her third time competing, Rhenana knew that her hard work would pay off. With her husband, Jeremy, and her three daughters, Kayla, 13, Hannah, 9, and Holly 5, she was proud to show them that she did not give up. In fact, her five-year-old daughter told her before the pageant, "You're not stopping until you get a crown."

"I could not let them see me give up on something or be discour-aged," Rhenana says. "I think them seeing me follow through and ac- complish my dream will have a lasting impression on them."

The pageant's director, Gayle Tape, a former Miss California and Miss USA finalist, wants the pageant to promote personal growth and community involvement through a program that is not judged merely on physical appearance.

"Directing a pageant that serves as an outreach program in our community is truly rewarding," Tape says. "Each contestant develops self confidence and gets involved in serving others, because they each select a platform they plan to promote. I was delighted with the group of participants this year and the audience of over 530 people was very supportive.",

Other winners that night included Erica George crowned as "2009 Miss Teen Bakersfield" and Angelica August crowned as "2009 Miss Bakersfield." The pageant included 35 local women in the three categories. The title holders will receive scholarships, prizes, personal training, and the opportunity to represent Bakersfield in the state pageant next year.
