High School Seniors Play in Arena Bowl

Fifty Kern County high school seniors will show off their collective all-star talents in the eighth annual U.S. Army Kern County Arena Bowl football game at 7:00 p.m. on May 1 at Rabobank Arena. Admission is $6 or $5 with a can of food that will be donated to local homeless shelters. The Arena Bowl Committee, made up of sports journalists and former coaches, came up with a list of worthy players whose placement on the two teams was decided by an online vote conducted on the ABC 23 Yard Line web page hosted by www.turnto23.com.

South High School football coach John Wren will coach the West team, and North High football coach Mark Camps will direct the East team. Honorary captains for the game will include retired Arvin High football coach Chuck Chamberlain and retired Bakersfield College head football coach Dallas Grider. Kern County Superintendent of Schools (KCSOS) Larry E. Reider will make the ceremonial coin flip to decide which team will receive the opening kickoff.

The Arena Bowl is sponsored by the U.S. Army, KCSOS Project 180, ESPN 1230 Bakersfield, and Boys and Girls Clubs of Kern County. Apart from the football game, players will take part in mentoring Project 180 at-risk students who are enrolled in Reach 4 Greatness Boys and Girls Club after-school programs.
