Itty Bitty BAM Scientists

Bakersfield Adventures for the Mind (BAM) rolls out an innovative preschool educational program called "Itty Bitty BAM Scientists." BAM volunteers and local companies team up to give preschoolers ages four and five at California State University, Bakersfield's Children's Center a one-of-a-kind experience. Industry leaders from companies such as S.C. Anderson, Inc., Mercy Hospitals of Bakersfield, and Fritch Eye Care Medical Center bring these lesson plans to life.

Jeff Foy, director of business development for S.C. Anderson, Inc., recently taught the children about the world of construction management complete with hard hats and architectural blueprints. At three different stations, the preschoolers learned how to sort different materials, build structures using industry tools, and demonstrate the theory behind the "Three Little Pigs" fairy tale. The students' hypothesized which house was the strongest: straw, brick, or sticks, and then put it to the test with some heavy duty "huffing and puffing."

"With our 'Itty Bitties,' we like to give them the 'WOW' factor. It makes it more exciting," says educator Jillian Fritch-Stump. "Just like real scientists, they get to hypothesize and test, so the next time they read the 'Three Little Pigs,' they will have their own scientific experience to bring to the table."

This innovative program is just one of the many facets of BAM, and Fritch-Stump plans on taking it to all kinds of schools teaching various age groups. BAM is a community project focused on building a state-of-the-art interactive, educational children's museum as a private/public partnership on the campus of CSUB.
