Community Reading Project Seeks Volunteers
How would you like to make an impact on the lives of second-grade students who are experiencing reading difficulties? You can by volunteering to tutor four students at a school site for one hour a week in the fall 2009 semester Community Reading Project.
Sponsored by the Kern County Superintendent of Schools and The Bakersfield Californian, the Community Reading Project trains and places volunteer tutors in teams of five, so there is a different tutor for each weekday. This insures that students receive assistance every day of the school week.
The Community Reading Project produces results. Students' reading abilities, measured at the end of each semester of tutoring, averaged almost two years of growth per tutored pupil for the 2008-09 school year.
