FRAZE_R
Chief Ron Fraze says he doesn't believe you choose your career, but it chooses you. "Firefighting is one of the most demanding careers you can aspire to, while at the same time, it is one of the most rewarding careers you can hope for," he says.

As newly recruited firefighters begin working for the Bakersfield City Fire Department, Chief Fraze enjoys watching them mature, grow, and excel in their careers. "As their careers progress and they go through the promotional process, I get the opportunity to see the pride in their families' faces as a result of their hard work," he says.

Chief Fraze began his career as a firefighter in 1985 and was promoted to Fire Chief in May 1998. This father of three and grandfather of one says he could not have done his job as Fire Chief without the support of his wife, Shelly.

Favorite movie about firefighters: "Fireproof" with Kirk Cameron.

Dunn
Chief Nick Dunn has been with the Kern County Fire Department for 28 years and served in almost every operational and administrative position within its department. He began service as a firefighter in 1981 and was appointed Deputy Chief in 2002; then earlier this year, he was promoted to Fire Chief.

He finds several parts of his job rewarding, especially the interaction with all levels of county government. He also says the mind-set of his firefighters really impresses him. "The County Fire Department is known for its emergency response, but it is the customer service attitude of our men and women that is most rewarding," he says.

As a member of a national response team, Dunn responded to the terrorist attack on the Pentagon on September 11, 2001, and to Hurricane Katrina in 2005. He also serves on several California Interagency Incident Management Teams.

With his wife, Sharon, a local elementary school principal, they have two daughters. He says he is a lucky man, because his family "has been my greatest cheerleaders during this amazing ride."

Favorite movie about firefighters: "Backdraft" with Kurt Russell.
