A MESSAGE FROM CHRISTINE FRAZIER
Kern County Superintendent of Schools
Welcome to a new school year – one that offers hope and opportunity to all our 175,000 plus students.
Today we face many challenges. But difficult times never negate our obligation to help more children discover and celebrate success.
Last year five Kern County schools received the highly coveted Distinguished School recognition. Our students took honors in numerous academic competitions, including the California and National History Day and California State Science Fair.
Today, technology allows students to share their lives and cultures with students around the world. Last year students shared experiences with those in Iceland, Romania and Singapore without leaving the classroom.
We saw a record number of classroom teachers nominated for California Teacher of the Year.
And we're launching a project to encourage more students to begin planning their careers and college pathways before they begin high school. Very soon you'll hear about uPLANit, a web-based program that allows students to explore countless careers and colleges.
uPLANit is video-based and can be accessed 24-hours a day. uPLANit contains nearly 500 videos that tell about career and college options. We hope parents and their children will collectively use uPLANit to map their children's future because it's never too early to plan for the ever-changing world.
Yes, we work and live in difficult times. But just like good times, difficult times can ignite innovation to help more students be successful. Thank you for supporting our schools in what I fully expect to be a full and productive school year.
