Mentoring Program at the Boys and Girls Clubs of Kern County

Boys & Girls Clubs of Kern County was recently awarded an Office of Justice Program (OJP) Group Mentoring grant through the Boys & Girls Clubs of America. This funding will positively impact the lives of current and new club members through enhancement and expansion of Boys & Girls Club mentoring programs for at-risk youth residing in distressed areas.

"Boys & Girls Clubs are increasingly playing a vital role in many young people's lives," says Zane Smith, Executive Director, of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Kern County. "In today's economic climate, we offer a positive place afterschool for children whose parents are seeking a safe and enriching environment for their children."

The club is actively recruiting mentors (ages 18 years and up) to be a part of the After School Mentoring Program at three Boys & Girls Clubs - Armstrong Youth Center (801 Niles Street, Bakersfield), Lamont Club (8301 Segrue, Lamont) and Frazier Mountain Club (3824 Park Drive, Frazier Park). The program is looking to match up mentors in a group setting (one mentor to 10 to 15 club members) for one to two hours per week after school (2:00 pm to 6:00 pm) with the goal for the mentoring to continue during the summer months.

The Boys and Girls Clubs of Kern County have 4 clubs and 35 school sites in Bakersfield, Lamont and Frazier Mountain. Overall, there are 4,300 youth daily that are effected in a positive way through their involvement with the Boys & Girls Clubs of Kern County. For more information, please visit
