City of Bakersfield Recreation & Parks Receives National Award

City of Bakersfield Recreation & Parks was recently selected to receive the 2011 Excellence in Water Safety Award by the National Recreation & Park Association (NRPA) for its "Make a Splash" water safety and learn-to-swim programs. This national award recognizes an agency for innovation in planning and delivering initiatives and/or programs that promote safety in, on, or around water that has resulted in documented benefits to the participants.

The "Make a Splash" program in Bakersfield is teaching thousands of children and their parents about the importance of learning to swim and to be safe in and around the water at all times. This program, sponsored by First 5 Kern and USA Swimming, to be nationally recognized is a testimony to the hard work of David Stricker, Aquatics Supervisor, and his talented staff in developing and implementing this program to benefit the community," says Dianne Hoover, Director of Recreation & Parks.

NRPA is a national not-for-profit organization dedicated to advancing park, recreation, and conservation efforts that enhance quality of life for all people. Through its network of 20,000 recreation and park professionals and citizens, NRPA encourages the promotion of healthy lifestyles, recreation initiatives, and conservation of natural and cultural resources.
