The Board of Supervisors has appointed Interim Fire Chief Brian Marshall as Kern County Fire Chief.  Marshall began service with the fire department as a firefighter in 1987, rose steadily through the department ranks, and became a Battalion Chief in 2001 and Deputy Fire Chief in 2006.  As Deputy Chief, Marshall supervised several fire department programs including purchase and maintenance of firefighting equipment, fire prevention, fire training,

public education, the Emergency Communications Center, and the Department Operations Center.  Marshall also developed the fire department’s section of the county’s strategic plan and the department’s capital improvement plan.

Marshall has served as incident commander or agency administrator on several wildfires in Kern County including multiple simultaneous lightning-caused wildfires in 2011 as well as the West fire, Comanche Complex fire, and Canyon fire.  As a national team member, Marshall responded to Hurricane Katrina as a disaster search canine handler in 2005.

Marshall earned an A.S. degree in Fire Technology at Bakersfield College.  In addition, he has completed extensive training in hazardous materials response, fire suppression tactics, and incident management at the Federal Emergency Management Agency, the National Wildfire Coordinating Group, and the California Fire Service Training and Education System.  Marshall and his family reside in Bakersfield.
