More than 70 students representing six local high schools recently competed at Bakersfield College’s Inaugural Drafting/Computer-Aided Drafting Competition. This competitive skills event, coordinated through the Engineering & Industrial Technology Department at Bakersfield College, is a first-of-its-kind experience for students in grades 9-12 enrolled in either traditional drafting or Computer-Aided Drafting courses in area high schools.

Competitions included Basic Mechanical Drafting by hand, Basic Architectural Drawing, and the Computer-Aided Drafting areas of: Basic Mechanical Drafting, Advanced Architectural Drawing, and Advanced Mechanical Drawing.

“The Industrial Drawing and Architecture programs at Bakersfield College are geared toward student success,” says Darren Willis, Bakersfield College assistant professor and contest coordinator.  “This competition gives high school students the opportunity to visit the campus, meet the department faculty,

and get their questions answered about programs and matriculation from career and technical education counselors. It is also a great way to advertise our programs to students considering entering these career fields.”

Bakersfield College is currently working to plan the second annual Drafting/Computer-Aided Drafting Competition. For more information about the event, please contact assistant professor Darren Willis at 395-4094 or by email at
