Ten Kern County Students Receive Awards at California State Science Fair Competition

Kern County has a history of shaping the future of science and technology, producing numerous scientists over the years who have contributed to their field.  That tradition continues as ten Kern County students recently received awards at the California State Science Fair competition at the California Science Center in Los Angeles, California.  Nearly 1,000 students from over 400 schools throughout California competed for awards totaling $50,000.

One Kern County student, Josh Arreola from Frazier Mountain High School, was selected as one of only three student representatives who spoke at a VIP luncheon of California Science Center trustees and dignitaries including former California Governor George Deukmejian.  Josh was selected for this prestigious job, because he has earned a spot at the California State Science Fair every year for the past seven years.  Only about one in every 1,000 students is awarded such an honor.

Congratulations to the following students who received 2012 California State Science Fair awards:  Jackie L. Staiger, St. John’s Lutheran School; Phillip M. Felzarta, Earl Warren JH; Madeline C. Kuney, Stockdale Christian School; Ryan D. Kmet, California City Middle School; Robert J. Fernandez, Valley Oaks Charter School; Samuel Z. Lang, Valley Oaks Charter School; Jacob C. Birks, Standard Middle School; Matthew J. Chaffee, Tevis Junior High; Irfan S. Habib, Stockdale High School; and, Callista E. Schoettmer, California City Middle School.
