My kids were recently watching Disney channel when I heard a remake of one of my all-time favorite songs from my childhood being played. The song, “Roam” was originally recorded by the B-52s in the late 1980s with vocals by Kate Pierson and Cindy Wilson. The 2012 remake was sung in the same upbeat, happy, can’t-help-but-sing-along fashion by Caroline Sunshine, her name befitting the lyrics and tempo. As I watched my kids dance around and sing the words, “Roam if you want to, roam around the world,” I had to laugh, because my five-year-old was singing “Roll if you want to…”
The irony: for the longest time, when the song first came out, I thought it was “roll,” too. My best friend corrected me, and I assured her that she was wrong. Back then, we couldn’t just type in a question to Google and have an instantaneous answer pop in from virtual netherworlds. I had to find out the old-fashioned way – wait for confirmation. After I bought my own copy of B52s’ Cosmic Thing cassette tape, I was proven wrong. The song title was, in fact, “Roam,” not “Roll.” I spent hours listening to this album, and I was genuinely pleased to see this song being enjoyed by a whole new generation – my kids! And, best of all, they were having fun together, and all three LITERALLY singing the same tune.
Like all siblings, my children have their ups and downs in how well they get along with each other. Thankfully, for the most part, they really do have each others’ backs when it comes down to it. KCFM enjoyed a beautiful afternoon in the orchards off Snow Road, where our featured siblings poured themselves and one another refreshing glasses of ice-cold lemonade at our picture-perfect lemonade stand. Check out the article, “What’s the Secret to Friendly Siblings?” on page 10 to see what these families have to say about sibling friendships. Thanks to the Estelle, Rubio, and Alvidrez families for a great photo.
In addition to a neighborhood lemonade stand, the summer can bring all kinds of fun adventures. The article, “Summer Bucket List,” lists 12 things your children should check off their life list before they are 12 years old. Find out what fun awaits you in Kern County this summer on page 19.
For a laugh-out-loud chuckle this summer, check out Tracie Grimes’s Humor at Home article, “(Exploding) Light Bulb Moments,” on page 13. She writes about her embarrassing moments that don’t provide the exhilarating “ah-ha!” Oprah talks about, but rather the irritating clash and clank of a breaking light bulb.
She also provides her monthly reading recommendations in her article, “Keep Kids’ Reading Skills Sharp This Summer,” on page 15. She gives some tips to help your children unplug from their electronics and read instead.
For books, she suggests the following: My First Soccer Book by Clive Gifford, Dinosaurs Around the World, and Life Cycles: Forest by Sean Callery. And, for dads, she says Zero Day by David Baldacci will be a heart-pounding read!
This month brings all kinds of exciting adventures – 4th of July, fireworks, pool parties – just to name a few. Check off those adventures on your summer bucket list. It’s the perfect time to sing at the top of your lungs to your favorite song or to the remake of a classic! And, don’t forget to wear your sunscreen!
