Anticipating the start of another school year, the Bakersfield East Rotary Club spent a warm Thursday afternoon on August 13th distributing 200 backpacks to the children of the Boys and Girls Club at the Armstrong Youth Center in Old Kern.

Jim Williams, Bakersfield East Rotary Club Community Outreach Director, said their continued support of the Boys and Girls Club meets a critical need in the community. “We organize programs and activities that are designed to help build body, mind, and spirit of so many underprivileged children.”

In addition to the backpack distribution, the Boys and Girls Club enjoyed their “End of Summer Celebration,” which included bounce houses, games and food.

During the past three years, Bakersfield East Rotary Club has donated approximately 675 backpacks to the Boys & Girls Club and helped hundreds of children be ready for school.

“This generous donation of new backpacks… will have our Boys & Girls Club members confident and ready for their first day of school,” said Zane Smith, Executive Director, Boys & Girls Clubs of Kern County. Altogether, they have 3 clubs and 48 school sites in Bakersfield, Lamont and Frazier Mountain, affecting more than 8,000 youth yearly in a positive way.
