New School Offers New Approach to Learning

At a recent open house and ribbon cutting, a new style of private school, Legacy Christian Academy, was officially introduced to the community.

The school, located on the Olive Drive Church Campus, is an edu scational hybrid of sorts. It is under the umbrella of the National Association of University Model Schools and combines the best elements of a private school environment, Christian-based curriculum and values, and homeschooling. The campus currently offers K-6th, with students receiving two full days of classroom instruction and two of homeschooling, following the same lesson plans and curriculum, plus occasional fieldtrips.

State Assemblywoman Shannon Grove participated in the ribbon cutting, and said she supports this innovative approach. “I believe it gives parents an alternative choice to Education, [for parents] that want to homeschool their kids because they don’t believe in what’s going on in our public school systems with overcrowding and curriculum mandates from the state,” she said.

The school began classes in September, and currently has 33 students. As the children grow older, the school will grow too, with plans in the works to add new grades and classrooms as needed to someday accommodate K-12th.

Academy Administrator Paula Cowan, who also teaches 1st and 2nd grade, was a public schoolteacher for 25 years and sees plenty of positives at Legacy, including smaller classes, lower tuition costs than traditional private schools, and teacher-parent interaction.

“We provide curriculum, lesson plans, and teacher training for parents,” said Cowan. “I think it’s a great balance. It gives parents time to teach and disciple their kids, and still have time with them in the evenings. We also offer art, music, and P.E. We’re educating the whole child.”

The cost is $260 per child for 11 months (classes meet for 9 months). For more information call 661-241-3866 or go to legacychristianacademy.us.
