Helping Hands After the Fire

Firefighters
In 1992, the Bakersfield Firefighter's Burn Foundation was founded by Bakersfield City Fire Captain Steven Dietz, who knew firsthand the needs of local Kern County burn survivors and their families. The Foundation now works in tandem with the Bakersfield satellite Grossman Burn Center at San Joaquin Community Hospital. With that partnership, the Foundation can now meet families while their loved one is being treated within the inpatient burn unit at SJCH and begin developing a relationship and determining where support is needed, while further maintaining long term contact and support with survivors to meet their changing needs as they progress through different life stages. The Bakersfield Firefighter's Burn Foundation services include:

♥ Burn Survivor and Family Support

♥ Compression Burn Garment Assistance

♥ Lodging and Fuel Card Assistance for Out of Area Families

♥ Burn Camp Sponsorships

♥ Burn Care Professional Education Assistance

♥ School and Community Re-entry

♥ Regional Burn Center Support

♥ Burn Prevention Education

♥ Survivor Scholarship Awards

Every summer, the Foundation also sends young burn survivors to camps throughout California. This allows survivors the opportunity to be among other kids in a safe, accepting and fun setting, pivotal in building self-confidence and creating lifelong friendships among burn survivors. With the help of local sponsors, last summer the Foundation sent 20 Kern County kids to Champ Camp, including many first-time campers.

The Foundation is a non-profit 501-c3 and has no paid staff; the Board of Directors consists of fifteen full-time, Bakersfield City Firefighters. All members serve in a volunteer capacity, including many from the community. Continued ongoing financial support for the Foundation is needed; donations large and small are greatly appreciated and are fully tax deductible.
