Celebrate Aviation Month at Minter Field

Aviation
November is National Aviation Month! One way to honor aviation is to explore some of its rich history, and a great place to do that is at Minter Field in Shafter, which began operations way back in 1941. It was an exciting place and a major basic training facility where nearly 12,000 pilots trained in BT-13s, UC-78’s, AT-6s, P-38s and B-25s. The airfield eventually became the largest training base of its type on the West Coast, with nine auxiliary landing fields. It is now base for many restored, flying WWII aircraft, including Stearmans, Ryans, Stinsons, North American AT-6s, and more.

Besides being a functioning airfield, Minter has a wonderful museum housed in its original 1941 fire station with a large collection of artifacts that include military uniforms, radio equipment, medals, patches, documents, models of aircraft and military vehicles and beautiful aviation art, in addition to photographs of the men and women who were stationed there. They also have several antique vehicles, such as a GMC fire truck, 2 jeeps, and a 1940s era Plymouth Staff car.
