Every Thanksgiving, the generous hearts and hands of Bakersfield get extra busy, including those of the Rotary Club of Bakersfield North, led by their current president, Keith Stonebraker. For the 11th year, the club will be giving away baskets filled with holiday goodies, including a turkey, pie, 5 pounds of potatoes, stuffing, rolls, and various canned veggies. They expect to serve at least 350 families this year.

Baskets will be given out on November 21, at the Standard School gymnasium at 115 East Minner Ave in Oildale to those families which have been identified as being in need by the Hope Center. Each chosen family will receive a ticket to pick up their baskets.

This annual club tradition got its start in 2001, when it also elected its first female president, Lynda Boleschka. As in previous years, the Bakersfield North Rotary members will be joined by the North High School Rotary Interact Club student members and Standard Middle School students to assist with assembling the baskets.

Club member David Milazzo said the giving of Turkey Baskets exemplifies the Rotary’s mission of putting service before self. “This is something we can do for an entire family that’s having a tough time,” Milazzo said. “This basket will feed a family dinner for several days and brighten up their holiday. It touches our hearts.”
