KCFM’s beautiful 12-year-old cover model, Evannah Graves, has bighearted plans for 2013. This New Year she wants to help people in need, especially those at the Cancer Society. With her parents, Charles and Linda, the Graves family hopes this New Year brings them peace, harmony, and good health.
As a family, they really enjoy celebrating the New Year. “My favorite tradition is to make Lucky black eyed peas. It is a southern tradition to bring luck all year long for whoever eats them,” says Linda. “As a family we love spending time together ringing in the New Year in Long Beach with my sister Diana, her husband Emilio, and their son Evan. It is always a special time.”
A sixth grader at Heritage Academy, Evannah loves school and considers herself a “country” girl. She loves sports, especially volleyball and basketball, dancing, crafts, decorating, cooking, and baking.
“I’m also in the choir, I play the piano and I dance,” Evannah says. “I especially like to dance for my Grandpa Field. He is my biggest fan; he calls me his little princess.”
Evannah’s favorite part of school is that she and her cousin Alex are in the same class and she loves her teachers. “My teachers are really nice and help me a lot when I need help,” she says. “I enjoy going to Bible class and spending extra time with Mrs. George.”
Heritage Academy fits her perfectly and her mother, Linda, has seen her “blossom” since attending. “As a mother I am so grateful that Evannah is in Heritage. The individual treatment for the students is unmatched in public schools,” she says. “Evannah has been having to go to vision therapy for the past few years. Evannah had less than 1% visual memory, which made it impossible to read when she was young. She has been working with Dr. Suter and now has the tools to learn. The wonderful thing about Heritage is that Mrs. George has worked with Dr. Suter, and with other students, and knew just what Evannah needed. All of the school has come together as a family and taking a vested interest in Evannah.”
“I know in my heart that she is in a wonderful, loving, nurturing environment, and Evannah can move mountains because she has already. Evannah is truly God’s gift to our family,” Linda says.
Evannah says she even enjoys wearing Heritage’s school uniforms because she always knows just what to wear. Using her designer skills, she adds her own personal style to her uniform. In fact, when she grows up she wants to be a fashion and home designer. “I design my own head bands and like to wear bright colored tennis shoes,” she says.
Evannah wants to start her college career locally at Bakersfield College then head to where she is a big fan, USC. She wants to wear the cardinal and gold just like many of her family members who have attended USC – her Aunt Diana, her Grandfather Field, and her Great Grandfather Field.
When Evannah is not actively participating in school, sports, or dance, you can find her playing with her three dogs, Lilly, Willie, and Princess; reading her favorite book, “Dolphin Tail;” watching her favorite movie, “Elf;” or being “Blown Away” by Carrie Underwood, her favorite song.
When asked about her cover photo shoot experience, Evannah says, “The photo shoot was the best time ever. I loved it, I would do it again in a heartbeat. I’m so excited about the cover. I feel like I can move mountains.” — Vaun Thygerson
