Lanterns

I was thinking for the lanterns - how about those LED candles you find everywhere that flicker and that do not have a real flame.

I have seen gymnastics build my son's confidence and self-control. As a Mom, I'd recommend this sport for any little boys out there. It really is a great foundation for sports and life in general.

Thanks Vaun for writing this article! Bringing awareness about the signs and symptoms is really important since they can be a slow onset and often times excused as a "bug" until the child is gravely ill.

What a joy to read! I have to admit that Tracie is my cousin, but what she wrote is fabulous and brought a giant smile to my face after a grueling day. (Being cousins, we may be alot alike)

Different ways to wear a Baseball Hat
March 29, 2010 | 06:20 PM

After a recent ball game, our 9 year old grandson wanted to wear his hat sideways. His Dad said he had to either wear it frontwards or backwards but not sideways. He cried and took off the hat. Without even a thought, I asked "Why" I was told "Because I said so." Another coach was asked how his son had to wear his hat and he also said "Just because he said so" I just could not understand! I have always wanted to explain to a child the "Why" because I remember that I always wanted to know why. Was I wrong to ask? Was I wrong to want to give my crying Grandson an anwser? I was spoke to terrible by my grown son and humilated because I asked. I was told that I was causing my grandson to not do as he was told to do without asking any questions. Is that the correct way to teach a child? I am very confused. I can remember asking a grownup over and over until I understood. Is that a proper way to teach a child? JUST BECAUSE I SAID SO!!

I apologize for incorrectly titling your magazine in my query! Please disregard that whole Melbourne's Child error. I meant to write Kern County Family! I'd love to use the excuse of "my kids were distracting me" for my terrible faux pas, however I can't since they're in school right now! Please forgive me.

Loving the Helping Hand
September 10, 2009 | 06:57 PM

A couple of months ago I discovered a great way to save money on my grocery bill. Angel Food Ministires which is operated by a number of churches provides high quality food at a reduced cost to anyone who needs it. I have particiapated in this program for several months now and have found that it has reduced my grocery bill by about $50dollars each month. Who couldn't stand to save about $50 each month on their grocery bill? The nice thing about this program is there are churches all over Bakersfield participating so people don't have to drive far to be able to take advantage of this great program. I am greatful to the people who have brought Angel food to Bakersfield.

Childhood
October 28, 2008 | 10:33 PM

Most of the time we get caught up in wanting our children to have what we never had as children. But we must not confuse that with experiences.
We need to teach our children how to be responsible and then perhaps reward them with those experiences.
Thank you for putting it all into perspective. This article really allowed me to vision the long term consequences for me and most importantly my child. I also vow to get rid of my gardner and cleaning services when my children are old enought to do it as proof of responsibility.
