February 2 is Groundhog Day—the day when we discover if there will be six more weeks of winter or an early spring.
According to folklore, the U.S. tradition springs from a Pennsylvania Dutch superstition that if a groundhog emerges from its burrow and spots its shadow, it will retreat to its den and winter will continue for an additional six weeks. If he emerges and doesn’t see his shadow, we can count on an early spring.
There are other such animal forecasting celebrations across the globe, but none more popular than the one with Punxsutawney (pronounced punk-sue-tawny) Phil in Punxsutawney, a small town of about 6,000 residents in Northwestern Pennsylvania.
Each year, thousands of people flock to Punxsutawney’s Gobbler’s Knob for a celebration where town leaders dressed in tall black hats converge to wake a groundhog for weather prognostication.
