The Kern High School District (KHSD) announced that it will offer free breakfast and lunch to all students ages 2-18 in the community this summer, from June 2, 2025, to June 27, 2025. Through the federally funded Seamless Summer Option (SSO) of the National School Lunch Program and School Breakfast Program, KHSD aims to ensure that every child in the community has access to nutritious meals during the summer months. Students do not need to be enrolled in a KHSD school to participate in the summer free meal program. All meals must be consumed on campus.

Kern High School District Announces Non-Congregate Summer Meal Service

June 18, 2025 — The Kern High School District (KHSD) will operate a Non-Congregate Summer Meal Service to provide free meals to local youth ages 2 to 18. The program is designed to ensure continued access to nutritious food during the summer months when school is not in session.

Starting Wednesday, July 2, and continuing every Wednesday through July 30, KHSD Nutrition Services will distribute free weekly meal kits from 9:00 AM to 11:00 AM at the following locations:

• Arvin High School – 900 Varsity Rd, Arvin

• Independence High School – 8001 Old River Rd, Bakersfield

• Kern Valley High School – 3340 Erskine Creek Rd, Lake Isabella

• KHSD Central Kitchen – 3701 East Belle Terrace Way, Bakersfield

Meal distribution dates are: July 2, July 9, July 16, July 23, and July 30.

Meals are available while supplies last at designated distribution sites. Each weekly kit features a variety of breakfasts and lunches. There will be a family limit of five meal kits per household. KHSD’s Summer Meal Service is part of a broader effort to combat food insecurity in rural and underserved areas during school breaks. The non-congregate model allows families to pick up meals and enjoy them at home, supporting accessibility and flexibility.
