Happy 20 years to Vaun Thygerson, contributing writer and local mama of 3!
Twenty years ago, I wrote my very first article for Kern County Family Magazine, and luckily, it was all about my favorite holiday — Halloween! My first assignment was a DIY Scarecrow costume, complete with all the little details that make a homemade costume so much fun. I could never have imagined then that this first article would begin a 20-year journey filled with stories, friendships, and countless memories.

When I moved here from Fresno, where I had been writing for Central California Parent, my editor encouraged me to meet LJ Radon. From that very first meeting, we clicked and formed a partnership that has lasted ever since. I still remember bringing my blue-eyed, blonde baby to that first meeting, as he snoozed in his car seat carrier. Today, he is a junior at college in Kansas, which makes me realize just how much time has passed. I’m incredibly grateful for the friendships I’ve built, especially with LJ, Lisa, and so many others who have made this journey special.

Over the years, I’ve had the privilege of meeting inspiring moms and dads, amazing children, and organizations doing meaningful work in our community. One such mom is featured in this month’s article, “Hello, Happy Mama: Katie Panici - A Brave Mama,” by Callie Collins on page 16. Katie bravely shares her journey through breast cancer diagnosis and recovery, and how her experience has inspired her to become an advocate for others. Diagnosed at just 35, Katie’s story highlights the importance of being informed about breast health and trusting your own instincts.

Another remarkable member of our community is Dr. Justin Deguzman, the new owner of Kids First Dentistry. Known as Dr. Justin Smiles, he’s bringing energy, creativity, music, and plenty of fun to the dental experience, helping kids see a trip to the dentist in a whole new way. In the article, “A Beautiful Day to Save Smiles: Reimagining How Kids See the Dentist,” on page 21, you can learn more about his unique approach and his viral song, “C’mon and Brush With Me”!

An organization that has strengthened our community is the Wounded Heroes Fund, which supports local veterans. The article, “Wounded Heroes Fund: An Evening with an American Hero,” on page 8, highlights its annual event honoring local veterans and their families, taking place October 10. This year’s honorary speaker, Wesley Leon, was the first veteran WHF helped 17 years ago and will share a story of courage and resilience after losing both legs during his service in Iraq.

As you dress up your little ghosts and ghouls in all things fun and spooky this Halloween, be sure to check out KCFM’s “2026 Trunk-or-Treats: Ghosts, Goodies & Gatherings” on page 23. It’s your go-to guide for festive family fun and pumpkin-packed events.

October is more than just Halloween’s tricks and treats; it’s also Raptor Month. In Andrea Rose’s article, “Look Overhead! It’s a bird, it’s a plane, it’s a RAPTOR,” on page 18, she recommends all kinds of books to help young minds learn about hawks, eagles, owls, and all the birds that fly overhead.

As I celebrate my 20th October issue with KCFM, I’m still grateful for that first Halloween assignment and even more grateful for all the stories, memories, and friendships that have followed. To celebrate this milestone, I'm donating 20 pounds of candy to my friend April’s elementary school Trunk or Treat on October 22. Stella Hills Elementary, 3800 Jewett Avenue, is collecting candy, and if you’d like to join me in spreading some Halloween cheer, the kids would love it!

Have fun trick-or-treating, and most importantly, stay safe!

In honor of Vaun’s 20th October issue, KCFM will also be matching her donation with 20 pounds of candy for the event.”
