One of my most unforgettable Independence Day celebrations took place 40 years ago, in 1986, when my family traveled to New York City for the centennial and the rededication of the Statue of Liberty. Not only did I witness one of the most breathtaking fireworks shows I have ever seen, but I also watched Whitney Houston perform her powerful hit song, “Greatest Love of All,” in tribute to our nation. It was a remarkable moment that has remained with me ever since.
This year feels especially significant. As America celebrates its 250th birthday, the occasion seems to call for something special. With family coming to town, we're planning to attend the Festival in the Park at River Walk, where I've heard there will even be a hologram of Benjamin Franklin. I have a feeling this Fourth of July will become one of those cherished memories we'll be talking about for years to come.
To help your family make the most of this historic celebration, KCFM has put together a 250th Celebration Guide featuring family-friendly events across Kern County. You'll find the complete guide in our Happenings section on page 25. Also included in this issue is our 2026 Spray Park Summer Guide on page 24, highlighting the best places to cool off during what is sure to be another hot Central Valley summer.
Speaking of heat, this month's Happy Mama knows a thing or two about weather. In “Hello, Happy (Barrier-Breaking) Mama: Elaina Rusk,” Callie Collins introduces readers to the chief meteorologist at local NBC-affiliate KGET. As a mother of three daughters, Elaina shares how she balances a demanding career, family life, personal wellness, and her passion for STEM education. To learn more about her inspiring journey, turn to page 14.
In honor of America's 250th birthday, KCFM is also celebrating the leaders, visionaries, and pioneers who helped shape our nation. In “Happy 250th, USA! Meet the People Who Shaped Our Nation,” on page 16, Andrea Rose recommends age-appropriate books that help children and families explore the story of America's founding. From the U.S. Constitution and the American Revolution to the Founding Fathers, her curated reading list offers a meaningful way to connect with the history behind this landmark celebration.
As our nation marks 250 years of independence, whether you're watching fireworks, attending a concert, visiting a historic landmark, or even chatting with a holographic Founding Father, take a moment to appreciate the freedoms and opportunities that make this country so special. Milestones like this remind us not only of where we've been, but also of the generations who will carry our story forward.
Here's to a summer filled with celebration, community, and memories in the making.
Happy 250th Birthday America!
